-Yesterday DaMarcus Beasley tweeted, "Would love to come back to the club that gave me my first chance! The Chicago Fire is like my family. #fireforlife". Many people took this tweet and ran with it. he was only responding to a fans question and that is it. I don't think that the Puebla winger is coming over any time soon. Sorry.
-According to reports from Germany, the deal for Arne Friedrich is looking closer to happening. The idea that we can get a player with a pedigree like Friedrich's for free seems to good to be true. So I did a little investigating to find the reasons the center back is not already under contract. Here is what I found.
Arne had a very good World Cup in 2010, but after that things started to go downhill for him. From 2002-2010 Freidrich was an anchor for Hertha Berlin. After the 2009-2010 season Berlin was relegated to Bundesliga 2, they subsequently sold Arne to VFL Wolfsburg for 2,000,000 euros. The center back signed a three year deal with the first division club. After signing his contract, Freidrich suffered a herniated disc in his back. He only played 15 out of a possible 40 matches due to chronic back injuries and surgery. On September 19, 2011 his contract was mutually dissolved due to a "long-term injury". He has not played since.
With all of this in mind, he has had a long time to recover and when healthy was one of the top defense man in the world. But buyer beware with the back problems.
-Today at 6:15 pm Chicago plays the final match in the Carolina Challenge Cup against, the hosting, Railhawks. With the Fire's players returning from international duty, I would imagine this match to have the first team getting to play most of the match. Curious to see who is going to be starting in the middle for Chicago today. There will be someone who should be in the Starting XI on the bench. Even tough the video feed has been sub par for the tournament, Brendan Hannan has painted an excellent picture for us. Catch his call again at chicago-fire.com tonight.
-On May 26th after the Crew- Fire match, Flogging Molly will be performing a show at Crew Stadium. Now as much as I like going to concerts, this seems like a bad time waiting to happen. Maybe it is just me but mix the Columbus fans mentality with booze and punk rock, and add rival fans. It does not take a genius to see what I am trying to say. If you Fire fans decide to stay for the show just be careful.
